Cannabis has come a long way from feared drug to powerful healer, with hemp milk being one of the healthiest vegan, gluten and soy-free dairy milk alternatives. In fact, cannabis has actually been able to turn the tables and become a super-food of all things.

As it turns out, the female cannabis plant is responsible for creating the psychoactive buds that we all love to get stoned on, but the male plants, on the other hand, produce a bountiful harvest of hemp fibres and hemp seeds.

While the hemp seeds themselves may not be able to get you stoned to the gills, they do provide an excellent nutritional supplement to those who enjoy going the extra mile in the name of self-care.

Although hemp seeds can be eaten independently in their unadulterated form, many people have begun to convert their hemp seeds to hemp milk to replace cow’s milk.

Make no mistake about it. Hemp milk isn’t your typical non-dairy milk alternative like other watery alternatives like almond milk or rice milk.

Hemp milk is one of the creamiest dairy-free alternatives currently available, and the best part is, it’s loaded with a cocktail of essential whole-plant amino acids as well as a decent amount of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids.

If hemp milk is starting to sound interesting to you, but you’re still unsure if you should try it or not, then read on.

In this article, we’ll be covering the benefits of consuming hemp milk, its nutritional profile, and how you can make some homemade hemp milk on your own!

However, that said, it is an acquired taste that may be off-putting to some. So, we’ll also be outlining fun ways to spruce it up and customize it to your liking.

So without further ado, let’s jump right in.

What is Hemp Milk?

what is hemp milk

Hemp milk is a vegan non-dairy alternative to cow’s milk made from blending hemp seeds and water together to create a creamy liquid.

Hemp milk is loaded with nutrients, including a high protein content and many essential fatty acids

Hemp milk can be found at most grocery stores and is sometimes fortified with extra vitamins and minerals to boost its already strong nutritional profile.

What Does Hemp Milk Taste Like?

Hemp milk’s flavour is reminiscent of hazelnuts and pine nuts. The taste itself is considered by many to be very subtle with a nutty undertone. In fact, its natural nutty flavour pairs well with its thick and creamy consistency.

Thanks to its neutral flavour, hemp milk can be used in place of regular dairy milk for just about anything.

That said, like most other things, hemp milk is an acquired taste. What may be considered neutral-tasting or nutty to some may be off-putting to others.

In fact, some users claim that hemp milk, especially when made at home, can have a strong and earthy flavour with a bitter, displeasing aftertaste.

Ultimately, it all comes down to personal preference.

Does Hemp Milk Get You High?

hemp milk and high

Unfortunately for those of us who enjoy our edibles, hemp milk only contains trace amounts of THC. Not nearly enough to get you feeling high.

As we briefly explained before, the female cannabis plant produces psychoactive cannabis buds. In contrast, the male cannabis plant is used for hemp fibres and seeds to make durable and robust material for crafts and food and beverage, such as hemp milk.

So, if you’re looking to indulge in some trippy, psychoactive effects, you’re barking up the wrong tree, literally. There is no real possibility for hemp plants to get you high with such trace amounts of THC.

That said, like any other food, it can be infused with THC, especially if you’re making some homemade hemp milk.

What are the Benefits of Hemp Milk?

For starters, hemp milk offers us a great nutritional profile that outclasses even the best plant-based alternatives.

To give you a better idea, here is what 240 ml of unsweetened hemp milk contains:

  • 83 calories
  • 1.3 g carbs
  • 4.7 g protein
  • 7.3 g fat
  • 2% of the daily value of calcium
  • 7% of the daily value of iron

For comparison, here is what 240 ml of homogenized dairy milk contains:

  • 160 calories
  • 12 g carbs
  • 8 g protein
  • 8 g fat
  • 30% of the daily value of calcium
  • 0% of the daily value of iron

As you can see, in terms of macronutrients, there are many similarities between the two. While dairy milk contains more calcium than hemp milk, hemp milk holds the upper hand in iron content.

Still, looking at labels can only do so much. Just as it is important to know how much fat, protein, and carbs a food contains, it’s just as important to know the quality or type of fat, protein, or carb.

This is where hemp milk truly shines. One of the most important aspects of hemp milk’s nutrition is that it contains a large amount of essential fatty acids like omega 6 and omega 3s.

Consuming these essential fatty acids on a regular basis has been linked to lowered blood pressure as well as improved heart and skin health

Last but not least, hemp milk is soy-free, gluten-free, and is also a vegan alternative to dairy milk.

How to Make Homemade Hemp Milk

Homemade hemp milk is incredibly easy to make. Unlike alternatives, like almond milk, where you must soak the nuts for hours on end to make it, hemp milk only takes a few minutes and a handful of ingredients to make.

If you’re interested in learning how to hemp milk at home, here is a basic recipe to follow:

What You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 – 1 cup hulled hemp seeds (adjust to change the thickness of your hemp milk)
  • 3-4 cups of water
  • A high powered blender
  • Maple syrup, honey, cocoa, vanilla extract – This is optional, but you can add varying amounts of each depending on how sweet you like your hemp milk
  • Strainer/cheesecloth (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Combine your hemp seeds, water, and additional ingredients (maple syrup, honey, etc.) in your high powered blender.
  2. Blend on high speed for approximately 1 minute or until the milk has reached the desired consistency.
  3. Grab a spoon to taste, and adjust accordingly. Additionally, if you would prefer to have smoother hemp milk, you can use a strainer or cheesecloth to remove any bits of hemp seed that hasn’t been blended.
  4. Transfer your freshly made hemp milk to a secure container and refrigerate.
