What You Need to Know Before Making Weed Popcorn

weed popcorn

Don’t get weed popcorn mixed up with popcorn weed! The two are nothing alike! Well, except for their shape, but that’s beside the point!

Unlike regular cooking, creating an infused recipe comes with problems and challenges that are unique to cooking with cannabis. Your desired dosage amounts, choice of infused product and serving size will all affect the potency and taste of your medicated recipe. If this is your first time making a medicated dish, here are a few things to look out for!

Dosage Amounts

Sometimes, our eyes can be larger than our stomachs, and this is especially true when it comes to making weed edibles. While we can more or less gauge how potent a bowl or joint of flower is, it’s more difficult to determine how much THC is in one piece of infused chocolate or a kernel of medicated popcorn.

As such, it’s important that you infuse your popcorn and any other medicated dish with a low amount of THC to start with. A light hand leads to great success, especially if you want to avoid greening out.

Activation Time

Did you know that edibles usually take some time to ‘kick in’ before you can feel their effects? Unlike smoking, vaping or dabbing, edibles can take anywhere from an hour to four hours before you can begin to feel high. This is due to 11-Hydroxy-Metabolite, a compound produced by our bodies when it digests and metabolizes THC.

Also known as 11-OH-THC, this compound is several times more potent than regular THC and can get you all kinds of messed up real fast. If you’ve ever overdosed on a weed edible before, you’ll know the feeling.

If you’re snacking on some popcorn with caramel, peanuts and butter added on top, it can be all too easy to forget that you’re eating edibles! Another reason why you should go for a light hand instead of a heavy one when you’re infusing your food with THC!

Smell

The smell of cannabis is one of the deciding factors of dank weed. If your kush doesn’t smell rank, then it isn’t very dank. While the smell of cannabis can help find new products to sample, the smell of weed can also be problematic for those who aren’t living by themselves or in a property they own.

Roommates, landlords and even housing associations might have concerns about the smell of weed wafting through the house and the surrounding area. And when you’re cooking with weed, this smell is extra dank.

If you do plan on medicated popcorn, consider your house and your environment before taking on the task.

Steps and Instructions

  2. Once the individual kernel pops, you can add the remaining popcorn kernels and sprinkle in the coconut sugar to give your popcorn a crunchy shell.
  3. Shake the kernels as they pop to prevent them from sticking and burning at the bottom.
  4. After four minutes, or when popcorn has stopped popping, remove the pot from heat and transfer to a separate bowl to allow it to cool.
  5. Once cooled, you can drizzle on your melted cannabutter OR your infused olive oil before tossing to mix.
  6. Add in any additional desired flavours to the mixture while the popcorn is still hot for better infusion and taste.
  7. Enjoy!
