A space bucket is an all-in-one solution for growing your own cannabis plant in a cost-effective, convenient way.

Keep on reading to find out all you need to know about this micro-grow technique!
What is a Space Bucket?
Space Buckets are DIY projects built from cost-effective materials that allow you to grow weed in the comfort of your home.
Appearance-wise they look like regular buckets. However, if you look inside them, you will see a small grow room made out of a light source, fans, a power strip and some soil.
This easy-to-make yet unbelievably effective project provides all of the key elements of a successful full-sized grow room and scales it down to suit the needs of a single plant.
This is also one of the reasons why Space Buckets are so popular among growers. Due to their small space requirements, anyone who wants to grow their own weed can do so in their small spaces whether it be their apartment, dorm, or even closet.
What’s more, and we have touched on this earlier, space buckets are cheap, efficient, and can be done on your own.
How Does a Space Bucket Work?
A Space Bucket works as a self-contained environment for your cannabis plant.
These buckets contain a LED light that allows a plant to grow without the need for sunlight in addition to a couple of fans for ventilation and a power supply.
It is usually made from a standard 5-gallon (19-litre) bucket, however, the actual height of the Space Bucket can be adjusted by adding more plastic buckets, giving your cannabis plant more room to grow taller.
The whole idea of the Space Bucket is to mimic the grow room and give you total control over the grow. It helps you to control conditions such as heat and humidity and ensures that your cannabis plants grow fast and strong. Some people even go the extra mile and add trackers to their buckets to track the internal temperature and humidity.
That being said, these devices can be as elaborate or as basic as you want.
How to Build Your Own Space Bucket
Building a Space Bucket is a fun process. Of course, you can purchase a premade bucket, but what’s the fun about that?
To build a space bucket yourself, you will need the following supplies:
- 2 x 5-gallon black plastic buckets
- 1 x 5-gallon plastic bucket lid
- 180W full-spectrum LED grow light
- 2 12V 80mm computer fans
- 1 power strip
- 4 x 6mm bolts with nuts and washers
- 1m of thin rope
- Spray glue or any other adhesive
- 1 Tube of silicone sealant
- Measuring tape
- Duct tape
- Reflective mylar
- Rotary tool
- Safety goggles/glasses
Yes, we know what you think. It looks like a lot. But let us stop you right there and think about it. Most of these supplies you might have at home or some of your friends might have them.
You can also purchase them at stores such as Walmart, Home Depot or order online from Amazon for a reasonable price.
Now, let’s make a Space Bucket.
Step 1: Create a Tray For Catching Drainage
Measure 8 cm upwards from the bottom of one bucket and draw a horizontal line. Put on your safety goggles or glasses and using your rotary tool start removing the bottom.
Save the bottom to catch drainage.
Step 2: Drill Drainage Holes
Grab your other 5-gallon bucket and remove the handle that is attached to it.
Turn your bucket upside down and drill 10 to 12 holes evenly distributed across the bottom for drainage.
This is the bucket that will sit on our drip tray.
Step 3: Attach the Buckets
Drill 4 holes in the bottom section of the space bucket that are evenly spaced around the circumference. Make sure that they are about 4cm from the top of the bucket and are spaced apart evenly.
Insert a bolt into each hole and secure it with a washer and a nut.
Once done, place your top portion of the Space Bucket on the bottom section.
Mark where each of the bolts touches the bottom of the top section of the Space Bucket and draw up 4cm and over 4cm to form an L-shape. Make sure they all point in the same direction.
Cut into the markings with your rotary tool as the bolts are meant to slide into the slot and twist to lock.
Step 4: Fans
Measure about 8cm from the top rim of both buckets. Use the fan cover to mark the cutout, put on your safety glasses and make cutouts.
Step 5: Install the LED
Now, we will attach the LED light to the lid of the bucket.
Using paper, trace the position of the mounting holes on the LED light. Transfer the position of the mounting holes to the center of the lid.
Put on your safety glasses and drill the holes according to your measurements. Finally, secure the light to the lid.
Step 5: Eliminate Light Leaks & Increase Reflectivity
In order to increase reflectivity and eliminate light leaks, it is advised to line the inside of the buckets with Mylar film and cover the outside of the buckets and drip tray with duct tape, respectively.
Do not cover fans and drainage holes.
Step 6: Plug it in & Test
Finally, it’s time to test your bucket. Mount the intake fan on the top bucket and install the exhaust fan on the bottom bucket. Plug everything in and make sure everything is operating as expected.
If yes, add a pot with a small seedling and don’t forget to feed and water it, so your plant grows tall and strong.
There you have it – a step-by-step guide to making your own Space Bucket.
